Guest Artist - January 22, 2019

We are pleased to have another local artist as a guest speaker next week. Laura Bak-Mahlkuch, a city girl transplanted to the Monroe countryside only 5 years ago, has been crafting and creating since the tender years of kindergarten. From embroidery, to quilting, to knitting, painting, clay work, and everything else in between. She has been beading and designing beadwork for the last 20 years and has found that out of all her creative outlets, beading is the most satisfying and versatile.  She enjoys off-loom bead weaving and bead embroidery the most, though she’s dabbled in loomed work, soutache, bead stringing, wire wrapping, and chainmaille.

Having retired from the Chicago Police Department in 2014 after 33 years of service, she relocated from Chicago to join her husband in working their dairy farm in Monticello. A short time later, they sold the farm and opened Prairie Star Lodge, a crafter’s retreat center, in Browntown. Their business is now going into its 5th year and has been touted by customers as the best retreat house out there. You are invited to join Laura for a stroll through her beading endeavors and savor the rich colors, textures and tactileness of the jewelry she creates using only a needle, thread, and beads.

And, as always, you are welcome to bring something you’re working on or would like to share with the group. Bring a friend who might be interested in joining us, as well.
