For the 37th consecutive year, Monroe Arts Center will exhibit artwork entered in the Wisconsin Regional Arts Program (WRAP) Competition. Artwork will be on exhibit March 22, 2024 through May 18, 2024. This event is co-sponsored by the Monroe Arts Center and the Association of Wisconsin Artists and is open to non-professional artists (must be at least 18 years of age) living in Wisconsin or neighboring states.

Artists are encouraged to participate in the WRAP competitions and workshops held in various regions of Wisconsin throughout the year. The State Award winners selected at the Monroe exhibit, along with all other 2023-2024 WRAP competition winners held throughout the Wisconsin, will be on display in September at a location yet to be determined. Guest Instructor: Doug Whittle

Doug Whittle received a BFA in painting from the University of Florida in 1984, and an MFA in printmaking from the same institution in 1990. From 1992-2004 he was a professor of art at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, where he taught drawing, painting, printmaking, and 2-dimensional design.

For most of the past 20 years his painting work has focused on traditional landscapes, but in the past two years has also begun to explore non-objective imagery.

Three years ago he decided to try painting en plein air, which is a just a French way of saying ‘open air’, in an effort to loosen up, as well as speed up, his studio paintings. He has learned that, in addition to be being quite a different challenge than studio painting, plein air painting can be very  humbling, which is never a bad thing.

Gallery Exhibits have been supported by MAC Corporate Underwriter Colony Brands, Inc. and Season Media Underwriter Big Radio, with additional support from David & Julie Buchanan, Lee & Chris Knuteson, Paul & Sue Barrett, David & Janeen Babler, Kevin & Chris Callahan, Deb Thompson, Barb Woodriff & Pete Guenther, Horst & Mary Alice Hart, Jane Paradowski, Chuck & Chris Wellington.
