Written by Vicki Quade, one of the creators of the hit comedy Late Nite Catechism, Christmas Bingo brings together two of the best things about being Catholic: Christmas and Bingo. The show features the character of Mrs. Mary Margaret O’Brien, a former nun and current bingo caller.
Quade, who wrote “Christmas Bingo” as well as over a dozen other nun-related shows, insists you don’t have to be Catholic to enjoy the show. She noted that Mary Margaret “appeals to Catholics in the audience, but also she appeals to all the non-Catholics.” Quade added that audiences “like the fact that it’s a clean show, it’s funny, it’s respectful. We’re all really one people.”
The show will start with Quade setting the scene. “We’re here tonight because we are going to create a new pageant — jazz it up,” she related. “We want to get people excited about Christmas again.” Some audience members will have a chance to come onstage and join in the silliness. Audience members will participate in holiday-related games about the different aspects of Christmas from candy canes to Santa Claus and play bingo while also answering questions about Christmas traditions, the origin of St. Nick, where do candy canes come from, miracles in the Bible. They will also hear about some really goofy Christmas movies, like the 1964 film “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.”
