CLASS DESCRIPTION

Pen drawings are probably the most portable, convenient and low-cost form of art making there is (with the exception of pencil). All you need is a pen and a piece of paper and you are ready to make art. The final step is to add watercolor for a dynamic result.

In this class, we will focus on what is called mark making. Some people may refer to mark making as line drawing, but I believe there is a difference between the two terms. Marks are emotional and alive. A series of marks creates texture which can visually be felt. Although a line is part of the mark making process, a line standing alone is begging for more attention.

Texturing techniques that will be taught during the class:

1. Contour lines
2. Parallel lines
3. Cross hatching
4. Dots or stippling
5. Scribble lines
6. Wavy grain lines
7. Criss-cross

In addition, transparent watercolor techniques will be demonstrated, including washes, glazing, brushwork (wet-on-wet and dry), color mixing, and special effects (using salt or Saran).

Class assignments to be completed at your own pace:

1. Create a set of pen marks and textures
2. Create a drawing using the seven pen works listed above
3. Create a color wheel
4. Create watercolor mixes on a grid sheet
5. Create a set of watercolor brushwork techniques
6. Putting it all together: create a final composed work of art using the pen and watercolor techniques learned in the class.
